Windows Mobile 6.5.3 TerreStar Genus dubbed as the first 3G/satellite capable phone

May 2024 · 1 minute read
With a lot of attention and focus being placed on 4G data networks and upcoming devices that'll be supported, the TerreStar Genus took a slightly quieter approach during CTIA. Luckily it's considered a first timer in being billed as the world's first smartphone with both 3G and satellite capabilities. The TerreStar Genus is powered by Windows Mobile 6.5.3 and sports a 2.6” QVGA touchscreen, 100MB of storage, 1400 mAh battery, H.264 video playback, 3-megapixel camera, GPS, Wi-Fi, and connectivity with satellites. So essentially this smartphone can literally be connected at any time in any part of the planet. However, it still does not have the ability to seamlessly go from 3G to satellite as you'll have to manually flip a switch to connect to your network of choice. Still, it goes to show that there's still a need for a device like this that'll enable users to always be connected even if they happen to fall into some dreaded dead spot in their network's coverage.
