PSA: the YouTube app lets you double-tap to rewind or fast forward videos

May 2024 · 1 minute read
Regardless of how much time you spend watching videos on your smartphone, interacting with the YouTube app is inevitable. So here's a friendly tip everyone should know – in the latest update, Google quietly implemented a double tap shortcut that that lets you fast-forward or rewind in 10 second increments. In full-screen mode, double-tap the left side of the screen to go back 10 seconds, and do the same with the right side to fast-forward 10 seconds. It's a small, but convenient addition, so use it to your advantage. But be aware of small inconsistencies – users are complaining of interface slowdowns.

The new feature is rolling out to users on Android and iOS worldwide, though not everyone will get it at the same time. The iOS update will also deliver new lockscreen controls for casting playback.

We tried to take some screenshots and show you the feature in action, but the overlay disappears way too fast and we couldn't catch it. Maybe we will be able to, after years of training inside a temple in distant Asia. Better update YouTube and try it yourself.
