Google Pixel Fold will reportedly have DIY repair guides and genuine parts via iFixit

Google followed Apple and Samsung last year when it introduced a self-repair program through iFixit which allowed owners of Google Pixel devices to perform out of warranty repairs on their devices. Now, Google has reportedly confirmed that this same initiative will continue with the Pixel Fold, making this device the first foldable with DIY repair support. This information was confirmed directly to 9to5Google by a Google spokesperson, assuring that the partnership with iFixit will include official spare parts for the Pixel Fold, just as it has done for its previous devices since the program was put in place. The spare parts that will be available include batteries, screens (including the inner folding display) and charging assemblies, as well as step by step guides and the necessary adhesives to complete the repair.

Considering that no other foldable currently has options for those that feel comfortable enough to do a self-repair, this is a welcome development for owners of the device as it will allow them to possibly save money on repairs and get their devices back up and running hopefully quicker. Samsung, for example, currently only offers mail-in services for repairs on their foldables.

However, for those that don't feel comfortable with a DIY job, Google will also offer in-store and mail-in repair options for the Pixel Fold. Additionally, for out of warranty repairs of accidental damages and mechanical breakdowns, Google offers its Preferred Care extended warranty that can be purchased as a monthly plan or a one-time payment. Note, though, that this extended warranty does require a deductible when used.

To proceed with a self-repair of your Pixel Fold, you will need to purchase the necessary parts and tools from iFixit, which will provide step-by-step instructions on how to repair your device. Though the Pixel Fold currently has an overview page on the iFixit site, no official guides or parts have been published or been listed for sale as of yet. For now, we will just have to wait for the official announcement by iFixit, which should be hopefully soon.
