Samsung's Flip series is not exactly known for its awesome cameras, but with this year's Z Flip 6 the company seems to have finally offered users a good camera system, and we are excited to test it out!
Galaxy Z Flip 6 camera upgrades
Finally, a new main camera for the Flip!
Yes, you read that right: we have a brand new main camera with the Galaxy Z Flip 6. We have been stuck with a 12MP main camera for so long, but now Samsung's more affordable foldable features a 50MP main camera.
The Z Flip's new main camera still comes with optical image stabilization, and Samsung states it supports 2x optical zoom, although we suppose the company means a sensor crop mode here. Optical zoom would be when we actually have a 2x telephoto lens.
New ultra-wide camera too
Samsung says that the new ultra-wide camera also comes with an upgraded image sensor. That being said, everything else about the camera from the sensor and pixel size to the field of view and aperture are exactly the same as last year's ultra-wide camera on the Z Flip 5.
Make sure you check our Galaxy Z Flip 6 vs Z Flip 5 comparison as we will be updating it with sample photos and videos soon, where you will be able to tell if there's any difference in the performance.
AI aid
Of course, Galaxy AI plays a role in the Z Flip 6's camera system, and it is used to improve the 10x digital zoom (which is the maximum). The AI also helps improve image quality by reducing noise (making clearer images) and enhancing HDR performance.
Samsung states that you can even use the night capturing feature in-app on Instagram, so you can take photos at night and message or share them directly from within the app.
FlexCam offers improved framing with Auto Zoom
This new feature automatically adjusts the zoom level to ensure your subject is well-composed within the frame. By detecting the subject, Auto Zoom can zoom in or out as needed, eliminating the need for manual adjustments. This allows you to capture both your subject and the surrounding environment in a single shot.
Larger lenses
Whether it is to make the Z Flip look cooler (As larger camera modules appear to be considered more premium looking these days...), or to facilitate the two new sensors, the two protruding lenses at the back are slightly bigger now.
Galaxy Z Flip 6 camera samples
Main camera
The main 50MP camera of the Z Flip 6 is not exactly the sharpest in the world, but it definitely gets the job done. Even thought it leaves us wanting a bit more in terms of detail, HDR performance seems to be pretty good, and we love the more natural colors.
Ultra-wide camera
Thankfully, much of what's great about the 50MP main camera on the Z Flip 6 also carries through to the—what Samsung claims is—new 12MP ultra-wide camera. The colors and HDR performance appear to be the same. The only downside is the low resolution and the blurry corners, but those are to be expected.
For a phone that does not have a dedicated telephoto camera, we are a bit surprised how good the zoom is on the Z Flip 6. Even at 10X zoom the text and overall image seem to be clear enough to make out the details in it.
Low light
Apart from the slightly incosistent white balance (whether the image colors appear warmer or colder), we think both the main and the ultra-wide cameras on the Z Flip 6 perform very well in low-light conditions.
Of course, some of the shadows are very dark and lack detail, and the images from the ultra-wide camera are a bit low resolution, but generally they look good.
Portrait Mode
While the portrait mode works pretty well as far as cutting the subject out from the background goes, we think that Samsung still has a very "artificial" approach to it. Galaxy phones have some ways to go before they achieve a more natural blurred background and foreground, like the one you would get from a proper camera and lens.
Selfie camera
Even though you should probably opt for the main camera when you want to take selfies (as it is much better), the embedded selfie camera in the foldable display also offers great image quality. We are happy with the detail and colors, as well as the HDR performance.
